🗣️ GTRJUNKIE
My wife got me a ukulele for my birthday. I picked it up quickly as I am a life long guitarist. However, I needed instruction as the tuning is not the same as the guitar. This book does an excellent job of introducing music theory in the format of familiar songs.
🗣️ Kristi
After purchasing a subpar ukulele primer by another author, that only taught how to strum chords, this book delivers exactly what I was looking for. It’s a straightforward, simple, yet serious approach to the ukulele. If you follow the lessons, you’ll be picking songs as well as harmonizing with chords. It’s a well rounded approach that mirrors lesson books for instruments people take seriously, like piano or violin.
This book stands out because it teaches you to read both tablature and traditional sheet music, which is a big plus if you want to grow as a musician. It introduces music concepts at a comfortable pace and encourages you to play melodies, not just chords. The included CD is a great tool to hear exactly how the lessons should sound, making it easier to follow along.

It is possible that I will teach Ukulele to kids in the future. In the meantime, I am reviewing this new book by Jenny Peters and Mark Pereira because it is certainly a treasure that I imagine a large group of ukulele players of all ages can use for their own “Home Study”, and for helping their own children learn to play the ukulele. The authors share valuable tips on playing better, like the correct strumming position and reading melodies in tab, which I found really helpful.
This book shines in how it teaches you not just chords but also strumming techniques and reading tablature, which is a big help if you want to play more than just simple songs. 🗣️ Guitarista
This is one of the most clear and concise method book I’ve ever experienced. It covers just about everything you need to know about tab, chords, reading music all in an easy to understand format.
🗣️ Robert Cunningham
I have this and the "Ukulele Method" book 1 and like this one much better. It starts off with strumming so knowing 2, 3 basic chords you can play something enjoyable. It talks about reading notes and playing individual notes. All other Ukulele books are so basic you can just go on YouTube and hit out a few songs. But this really takes you from beginner and if you practice enough the content takes you to playing advanced songs. There's also practice methods which many books skip out. For reading music notes I like how you can play a few songs just knowing a handful of notes. It makes you feel like you're learning and confident to push on. It's a jam packed book and once you go through it you can just get song books.
This book does a great job teaching you not just how to play chords but also how to read music and tablature, which is a big plus if you want to grow beyond just strumming simple songs. The lessons are thoughtfully organized so you can progress at your own pace, and the included songs give you plenty of chances to apply what you’ve learned.

I have fallen in love with this large print edition of my already well used book: 21 Easy Ukulele Folk Songs. This book of songs is both suited for the beginning ukulele player as well as for the intermediate player. The authors, Jenny and her sister, Rebecca, have written it in a way that helps the beginner find success through clear directions and an accompanying online video for visual learners, but also challenges the intermediate player by offering the same song in a different key, in a different form like tablature or chord melody, and suggesting different strumming patterns and playing styles to keep the song interesting both for the player and the listener. The short explanation of each song also draws the player in deeper, helping him or her play with meaning and understanding of the history of the song song and its lyrics. The best part of this already favorite book is the large print feature. I have included a comparison shot to show you haw wonderfully clear the notes and words are. I now can focus on my playing because the music is so easy to see. I also enjoy playing with my husband or grandson, one strumming and one playing the chord melody or tabs. We can both easily see the music on the stand. This book is perfect for players wanting to play duets with someone else. I feel I have grown so much as an ukulele player and books like this have encouraged and helped with that growth.

As advertised-a large print book with 21 folk songs. Ones you actually recognize. A total of 141 pages of music, instruction, hints and tools. All useful. All songs have both note and tabular format. Some have additional accompaniment arrangements. All have a strumming pattern suggested. Each song has introductory information about the song. New chords are introduced, as needed and illustrated in a look at format-- both looking at and looking down from a playing position. A finger placement picture is included, as well. Super helpful for new players. Songs progress from easier to harder but anyone could pick this up and be playing quickly. The in-book instruction at the front of the book is very helpful especially for a new player. The last pages get you to additional resources and other books that are available. I love the large print format and the layout has limited the need for excessive page turns to finish a song.
This book doesn’t just throw songs at you — it teaches you how to play them with confidence. You’ll start with basics like tuning and simple chords, then move into strumming patterns, fingerpicking, and even chord melodies.
The included song histories and explanations help you connect with the music, making practice more meaningful and fun.

🗣️ Bob Penn
I initially purchased "The Daily Ukulele" and was very pleased with all of the songs. I think I recognized about 80 to 90 percent of the songs in the book. That lead me to purchase the "Leap Year" edition. It also has a lot of good music in it. Depending on your age, you may recognize a lot more of the music than I. I liked the comb binding of the book. This makes for easy turning of pages and allows the book to lay flat on your music stand or table top. The front section of the book essentially duplicates the front section of the first book. It provides basics of ukulele tuning, strumming, chords, techniques, etc. Like it predecessor, it has the basic chord fingering diagrams at the top of each song. The melody and words are provided with each song. The chord names are printed above the music staff as appropriate. With the two books, I have more music than I will ever need or want. Both are a good investment.
🗣️ Northwest Dad
Another great collection of songs! Was pleasantly surprised at the list offered. There are some very easy songs with only 2-3 simple cords, while there's also some intermediate songs that offer a good challenge for beginners. All have a list of the song's cords in tab visuals at the top, then each cord letter is listed above the measures as you play to indicate where you transition. As a beginner, I will also draw my own tabs next to each letter cord throughout the song so it's an easy visual vs. having to memorize each fingering. This advances my ability to play a song right away - even the first time through, which motivates me to play more. It also speeds up my memorizing of certain cords. Words also included, so great for a sing-along. Overall, the book has a great layout. Since the melody notes are in the measures, so you could even use this for other instruments if desired. I bought this after owning the original Daily Ukulele book for a year, and it's a great companion. Either book by themselves are great, but if you want more, then get both!
This book isn’t just a song collection—it’s a practical guide that helps you understand chord shapes, strumming patterns, and how to read music notation for ukulele. The included basics section is a handy refresher, and the way chords are integrated right above the lyrics and melody makes it easier to follow along and build your skills naturally.

All the songs in this book fit the uke with its standard tuning of GCEA (high G). Some other books just slap guitar melodies on top, making them unplayable on the uke, but this one gets it right. Every note is playable, tabs are included, and the lyrics are all there. It’s a great book for sing-alongs with fun tunes like “I Walk the Line” and “House of the Rising Sun.”

Buy NowWhen picking a ukulele book for beginners, you want something that guides you step-by-step without overwhelming you. Look for books that start with the basics like how to hold and tune your ukulele, simple chords, and easy strumming patterns. It’s a big plus if the book includes clear illustrations or photos and offers online video lessons or audio to help you hear how things should sound. Also, consider the song selection—starting with familiar or simple songs can keep you motivated.
Some books focus more on strumming, while others introduce fingerpicking or music theory, so think about what style you want to learn. Lastly, check the book’s length and price; something around $10 to $20 USD usually balances content and affordability well.
To get the best results, take your time and practice regularly rather than rushing through lessons. Use any accompanying videos or audio to match your playing with the correct rhythm and tone.
Don’t hesitate to pause and replay tricky parts until you feel comfortable. It’s also helpful to practice chord transitions slowly before speeding up. If the book includes different strumming patterns or fingerpicking techniques, try to master each one separately before combining them with songs.
Remember, learning an instrument is a journey, so celebrate small wins like playing your first song or clean chord change. If you get stuck, supplement your learning with free online tutorials or join a ukulele group for extra support.
Absolutely! Many ukulele books for beginners are designed specifically for people with little to no prior musical experience.
They often explain concepts like reading tablature, basic music theory, and rhythm in simple, easy-to-understand language. Some even include tips on how to practice effectively and avoid common mistakes. If you’re new to music, choosing a book that offers both visual aids and online video support can make learning much easier. Just be patient with yourself—everyone starts somewhere, and with consistent practice, you’ll find yourself improving steadily.
If you do have some musical background, you might appreciate books that go a bit deeper into theory or fingerpicking, but beginners without experience will still find plenty of value in these resources.
Choosing the right ukulele book for beginners can set you up for success and enjoyment as you learn this delightful instrument. The books reviewed here offer a variety of approaches—from quick song-based learning to comprehensive method books with theory and practice exercises.
With options that include online videos and engaging song selections, you can find the perfect fit for your learning style and goals. Investing in a quality beginner’s book will help you build a solid foundation, stay motivated, and enjoy making music every step of the way.
